Since your lips are one of the most beautiful and important focal points of your face, you want to pay special attention to them when applying makeup. If you apply lipstick correctly it can be a beautiful addition to your features. However, lipstick can be a disaster if you don't apply it properly or you're wearing a shade that isn't best suited to you. Nothing is more distracting than bad lipstick, lipstick stained teeth or lipstick bleeding outside of your natural lip line. Knowing how to properly apply lipstick will help keep your overall look balanced, as well as accentuate your smile and face.
Here are some tips and tricks to make your lips look their best with perfectly applied lipstick:
The Right Lip Color. Find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup. The most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip color. To test shades, apply the lipstick to one lip. If that color is just a shade or two deeper than your natural lip, you have found your shade.
Red Lipstick Never Goes Out of Style. Many women wrongly believe they cant wear red lipstick. Whether light, dark, orange, or slightly berry-toned, red lips always appear on the pages of fashion magazines and runways. That's because red lips never go out of style. For the most complementary red lipstick, consider your natural undertones. If you're warm with olive or yellow undertones, choose a lipstick with orange or brown tones. (Think brick red or fire engine red). If you're cool with pinkish or reddish undertones, pick a red lipstick with blue or pink tones.
Apply Your Makeup First. If you're wearing lipstick in addition to your makeup remember one golden rule lipstick compliments your makeup. If your eye makeup is stronger balance it by wearing a soft lip color and in case of soft eye makeup, nothing is more elegant than wearing a bold and rich colored lipstick.
Step 1: Use a lip liner pencil that is the same shade or just a shade darker than your lipstick color to outline your lips. Start by defining the center curve of your upper lip using two precise strokes. Then, using short strokes, continue to line the rest of your upper lip (Hint: applying short strokes is easier than drawing a continuous line). To line the lower lip, work form the center out towards the corners. Be sure to keep your mouth closed and relaxed while lining your lips.
Step 2: There really are no strict rules when it comes to lipstick application. The method of applying directly from the tube, with a lip brush, or with your finger is actually just a matter of preference. Begin coloring in your lips. Work gradually towards the lip outline, relax your mouth so it opens slightly. Apply your lipstick starting at the center of each lip working outwards. If you'd like a deeper effect blot your lips gently with a tissue without removing too much lipstick and then apply another coat. Don't make the mistake of rubbing your lips together otherwise lip color may spread to other parts of your face where it doesn't belong.
Step 3: Next, to ensure that there are no unfinished edges, open your mouth wide and brush the color into the corners.
Step 4: Gently blot your lips on a tissue paper, being careful not to smudge or remove too much color.
Step 5: Apply a second coat of lip color to touch up and create a deeper effect. (Hint: For a more natural day time look, blot your lips again lightly with a tissue. If you want a shimmery evening look, do not blot your lips after the final application.).
Step 6: If you end up with a little lipstick that falls outside the lip lines, there are two ways to remove the imperfections. One, you can use a cotton swab with a touch of make remover, and erase the flaws. Two, you can use foundation or concealer to go over the flaws.
Extra Tips:
Applying a lipstick that contains a moisturizer and sun protection is an effective way to help protect your lips from wind and sun damage.
Applying lipstick after drawing a crisp lip outline helps to keep the color from bleeding.
You can also use the tip of your lipstick to outline your lips and then use the broader face of the lipstick to fill them in. Just be sure not to use the tip to fill in your lips.
Always carry your lipstick with you in case of accidental removal or if you need to do a quick touch-up.
If you want to have fuller lips, apply the lip liner outside of your natural lip line. Work on it slowly and steadily to get the perfect shape. Fill in with the lipstick. A highlight of gloss on the upper lip will help create an impression of fullness. Another trick for plumper lips, apply a bit of lip gloss in the center of your bottom lip. EcoGlo's Lip Plumper is also wonderful for plumping your lips.
If you are retouching your lips and see that your blush is fading, put some lipstick on your fingertip and apply it on your cheeks.
Lipstick is the most important addition to any woman's bag. There are so many lip colors available today there really is no reason why you shouldn't experiment a little. Try something bold and brassy or understated and pretty. Either way if you have the right attitude, lipstick is like wearing a hat, it just takes courage and style!
